Author Charles Neimeyer is director of Marine Corps history at Marine Corps University in Quantico, Virginia. In this historical narrative, he details the military actions in and around the Chesapeake Bay during the War of 1812 and charts the roles of major American figures, including Major General Samuel Smith, as well as British figures including Vice Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane and Major General Robert Ross. The account provides ample details leading up to the defense of Fort McHenry (the victorious battle that is now commemorated in the American national anthem).
