Based on a series of lectures the author gave at the Hague Academy of International Law in the summer of 2012, this volume examines the relations between Pan-Africanism and international law, focusing on the activities, practices, and attitudes of all African states towards international law and as members of Pan-African organizations like the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and African Union (AU). It traces the various stages of the evolution of Pan-Africanism from a diaspora-based movement to groupings of independent states and intergovernmental organizations that promote African unity through social, economic, and political integration schemes based on the ideals of Pan-Africanism. It discusses states' exclusion from the Eurocentric doctrines and principles of international law during the 19th century; the phase when Pan-Africanism took root among the first independent African states in the 1950s, the support from the United Nations, and the state participation in the codification and development of international law; the development of state-centered Pan-Africanism following the creation of the OAU and AU and the relationship to international law; and intra-African rules like the African Convention of Refugees, the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, the African Protocol on the Rights of Women, and the Bamako Convention.
