Wilson, who went on an overseas experience while in his 20s, draws on oral accounts of several hundred travelers from New Zealand who had overseas experiences (OEs) in Britain for two to three years when they were young to gain work, travel, and life experience. He also uses travel memoirs and other literature, travel guidebooks, and information from popular culture to detail the significance of OEs in their lives and describe how the practice has changed over time. He explains the history of the overseas experience since the mid-20th century, its popularity by the turn of the century, and how it has become a cultural icon in New Zealand. He discusses why New Zealanders travel to Britain, work aspects, how the travelers tour Europe, identity and culture issues, accommodations, and coming home. Distributed in the US by ISBS.
