Anthropologist Greenhalgh views the fight against excess weight in the US in the words of people who are its targets. She interviewed 45 young people about their personal struggles with with diet, weight, and "bad body-mass index (BMI)," showing how the war on fat has produced a generation of young people who are obsessed with their bodies and BMI and whose most fundamental sense of self comes increasingly from their size. The result, she finds, is that almost everyone of any size is miserable about their body, and almost no one is able to lose weight and keep it off.
