Editor Corrigan presents this volume on person-centered mental health care, an approach that reconceptualizes patients as consumers and compliance/adherence issues as evidence of failure in treatment protocol. Chapters 1-3 address the problem of treatment discontinuation and link it to a lack of self-determination, increasingly recognized as an important factor for lasting effectiveness of mental health therapies. Chapters 4-6 build a practical framework for supporting self-determination in the form of person-centered perspective, advance directives, and shared decision-making. The second half of the book discusses motivation, as well as cognitive and social factors impacting mental health treatment and also perspectives on particular populations and challenging contexts such as legally mandated treatment.
