The author examines problems with crime labs and explains how to stop wrongful convictions by creating independent forensic labs. She illustrates these problems with the case of George Rodriguez, who was wrongfully convicted of rape, then discusses the causes of different types of scandals and crises in police crime labs, the problems with forensic science and biased lab analysts, the need for safeguards in the justice system, and the National Academy of Sciences Report from 2009 calling for crime labs to be removed from police agencies and made independent, ending with the example of Houston's independent lab.
