Explorations in Behavioral Archaeology

Citing the centrality of material objects in all human activities, and keeping with behavioral archaeology’s (BA) study of people-object interactions in all times and places, from modern sculptures to American Colonial privies to Paleoindian chronology, Walker and Skibo present a strong model of inference relevant to interpretations of archaeological site formation processes, including fast (historic battles, global capitalism), medium (Paeloindian chronology, ancient migrations), and slow (evolution of ceramic technology). This model links archaeology more broadly to studies of communication, history, and art. Fifteen chapters are: introduction to explorations in behavioral archaeology; behavioral assessment of a battlefield signature: the study of a Pompeii-like event; prior probabilities and explicit assumptions in Paleoindian chronology building; a behavioral archaeology of ancient migrations; why no Kayenta at Chodistaas pueblo?: a behavioral archaeology critique; the opportunistic midden at post-contact-period New Hampshire sites; behavioral archeology in the Ballona wetlands; applying behavioral archaeology to the fine arts: theory into practice; looking for the point: understanding bone and metal awl use on the northern plains; assessing the value of cracked pots: ceramic repair and life history at Homol’ovi; the adoption of pottery in the Eastern United States: a performance-based approach; the behavioral scale?; behavior and practice in archaeology: a realist view; modern material culture and ruins in Ambos Nogales (Arizona and Sonora); technological continuity and change post-disaster: a behavioral model.
