The authors provide mental health and medical specialists who have limited training in sleep medicine with developmentally appropriate interventions for common behavioral sleep problems in children. They discuss typical sleep across development and healthy sleep habits, common pediatric problems, and key concepts for behavioral sleep medicine; clinical assessment of sleep and working with families to increase treatment success; and the problems of sleep-onset associations and night wakings, bedtime stalling, nighttime fears, anxiety, recurrent nightmares, insomnia, delayed sleep-wake phase, confusional arousals, sleep terrors, sleepwalking, nocturnal enuresis, and nonadherence to positive airway pressure therapy. They include information on the presentation, prevalence, and etiology of sleep problems; options for different treatment approaches, including those across development and for special populations; how and why treatments work, with discussion of empirical evidence; assessment; instructions for implementation; examples of what to say to families; ways to manage potential pitfalls; and treatment handouts.
