The writers of this compilation of research-based guidelines for secondary teachers are themselves researchers and teachers. In Section I, "What Really Works in Content," six chapters discuss math, reading, writing, social studies, science and art. The procedure in every chapter is to explain what effectiveness means for the given subject, then list activities or strategies for teachers and administrators to stop doing, followed by a list of activities and strategies to start doing. Chapters also have lesson plan ideas; forms, charts and other supporting visual aids; and further readings. Topics in Section II, "What Really Works in Instruction," are technology, positive behavior, classroom management, cooperative learning, Universal Design for Learning, inclusion, co-teaching and assessment. Section III, "What Really Works with Special Populations," covers gifted education, English language learners, autism, deaf education, social skills and family collaboration.
