Geissler presents a biography of naval theorist, Alfred Thayer Mahan, who published The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660-1783 in 1890. Although Mahan (1840-1914) was one of the most influential authors of the nineteenth century, biographical accounts of his work and life have previously overlooked his religious faith. This book focuses on Mahan’s writings and activities in the Episcopal Church, as well as the influence of Mahan’s faith on his naval and geopolitical writings. It also discusses the importance of two male role models in Mahan’s early life: Mahan’s father, Dennis Hart Mahan, military scholar and professor, and Mahan’s uncle, Milo Mahan, Episcopal priest and professor.
