American contributors in psychology and counseling detail theory, research methods, and applications in the study of masculinity and men’s identities. The first part of the book examines historical, conceptual, and methodological issues such as the gender role strain paradigm, gender role conflict research, psychodynamic psychology of men, biological influences on masculinity, and methods for researching masculinity psychology. Part 2 offers insight on specific populations. After discussion of everyday racism as a threat to the masculine social self, chapters are devoted to African American, Asian American, Latino American, and Native American men, as well as gay, bisexual, and transgender men, older men, and children. Part 3 explores special topics including social class and masculinity, male stereotypes, the neuroscience of men’s emotions, fathering, pornography and male socialization, and men’s friendships.
