Music historian Hoskyns harks back to the glory days of Woodstock, New York--the small town not the fabled venue 60 miles away. Before the famous festival in the country, Woodstock, the town, was already known to rock-n-rollers, schemers, and hippie capitalists. Drawing on interviews and his own experience of living there in the 1990s, he recreates the 1960s community of diverse musicians--Bob Dylan, members of The Band, Janis Joplin, Todd Rundgren, Jimi Hendrix, Karen Dalton, Van Morrison, and others--overseen by the powerful manager Albert Grossman.
