He looks at animal sentience as a theme in this literature, including Horacio Quiroga's animal stories, José Manuel Morroquín's El Moro, Hernán Robleto's Una mujer en la selva, Rafael Bernal's Su nombre era muerte, and environmental novels by Luis Sepúlveda; how poetry and stylized prose by Pablo Neruda, José Emilio Pacheco, and Homero Aridjis discuss animal status, nonhuman subjectivity, and other aspects of being; and ethical representations of animals from the late 19th century to recent fiction and poetry, including works by Ciro Alegría, Francisco Coloane, Miguel Ángel Asturias, Rigoberta Menchú, Arturo Arias, Jorge Burel, Mempo Giardinelli, Raquel Olivera Antúnez, and Fernando Raga.
