Scholars of international and maritime law explore issues and situations that have arisen since the widespread acceptance of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. They cover flag states, port states, coastal states, seafarers and human rights, and institutions. Among their topics are US bilateral shipboading agreements upholding Law of the Sea principles while updating state practice, reconciling competing norms for assistance at sea and places of refuge for ships, the "new" Arctic passages and the "old" Law of the Sea, seafarers as an agent of change of the jurisdictional balance, and the European Court of Justice and its role in redefining European Union member states' jurisdiction over ships.
