This textbook is directed specifically to international students studying for a law degree in the US. The text gives these students background on the US law system and aspects of real-life practice in the US and explains how to write in the style that US legal audiences expect. The text introduces the common law system in the US, shows how to analyze a legal source by applying the relevant rules of law, and how to communicate this analysis in writing. It covers legal vocabulary for the US legal system and tackles grammar and usage problems that are common for lawyers who speak English as a second language. The book also explains law firm hierarchy and culture and reviews what partners expect from associate attorneys and international counsel. Appendices offer many examples of good legal writing in various forms, from memoranda to trial briefs.
