Korea emerged from the Korean War and Japanese colonialism to become a divided nation, occupied by communist forces in the North and the United States in the South. As the post-Cold-War era in Northeast Asia continues to be influenced by power politics, it has also seen an increased need for international law due to the forces of globalization, regional concerns over ocean resources, trade and other non-security matters. Korea’s ascent coincides with the advent of globalization and growing importance of international law in managing the increasing interactions between states and other non-state entities such as multinational corporations, non-governmental organizations, and international organizations like the United States. This textbook addresses the developments of international law in Korea from human rights concerns to law of the sea issues; from maritime delimitation and access to ocean resources to other non-security matters.
