The authors of the 11 articles presented here by Gallagher (international economics, Boston U.) are in general agreement that state intervention in national economies has been a significant part of development success since World War II and that current and proposed ruse for the global economy are restricting state policy space for development. Collectively the papers defend this view, describe types of successful development policy, and consider ways that nations can preserve and expand current policy space is order to promote development.
